SCoLA Schools Recladding and Refurbishment

ABD Builders have been awarded the contract for the recladding and interior refurbishment of 4 Hampshire schools built in the 1960s under the SCoLA system:

Overton Primary School, Basingstoke

Oliver's Battery Primary School, Winchester

Talavera Infants School, Aldershot

Wootey Junior School, Alton

The use of pre-fabricated building systems enabled local authorities to quickly and effectively address the serious shortage of school places in post-War Britain.  These buildings, although still fulfilling their intended purpose, are now outdated, inefficient and expensive to run, and Hampshire County Council are addressing this with a county-wide programme of refurbishment.  The works include new exterior cladding, asbestos removal, new glazing and internal re-design and redecoration.  The use of brick infill cladding panels is less disruptive, requires less site storage, and results in a 33% reduction in construction time when compared with traditional masonry methods.

All four schools will be fully-functional during the works.  Two or more temporary classrooms will be installed on each site and secure routes in and out of the building have been arranged and are redesigned for each phase/area of the works.

Completion of the works will see these buildings transformed into energy-efficient, comfortable environments that offer modern, well-designed surroundings to inspire students and teachers.
